One of the best things about photographing wildlife in Kruger is the sheer abundance of animals. The forest is home to the endangered mountain gorilla – as well as many other species of primates, birds, and mammals – but it is this majestic and alluring ape that draws in visitors to it home from all over the world.

Lying on the edge of the Albertine Rift – which is the western branch of the Great East African Rift – Bwindi sits at an elevation ranging from 1,160 to 2,607 meters. The forest contains around 160 species of trees and over 100 species of ferns. The name Bwindi comes from the extensive stands of bamboo interspersed amongst the larger forest hardwoods. Bwindi is sometimes known as the “Place of Darkness”, because of the bamboo and thick ground cover of ferns, vines, and other plant growth.

Photographers – whether with a DSLR or phone-camera – can capture incredible shots of these rare and elusive animals in their natural habitat, with opportunities for close-up shots of their intricate social behaviors and interactions. The forest’s misty landscapes and dense foliage provide a stunning backdrop for wildlife photography.

However, gorilla trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is strictly regulated, and permits are required to enter the forest and photograph the gorillas. It’s important for photographers to follow ethical guidelines when photographing the gorillas, such as maintaining a safe distance and avoiding the use of flash photography, which can be harmful to the animals.

Nomad specializes in gorilla trekking tours, taking our guests to the beautiful mountains of Uganda – notably the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park – to see these majestic giants in their natural habitats. These creatures are extremely endangered – there are approximately only 600 left worldwide – and they are incredibly difficult to get to; making seeing the mountain gorillas a real once in a lifetime opportunity. Observing these endangered animals in their natural environment is humbling and extremely rewarding as they’ll enlighten you to how simply life could be, and Bwindi is the perfect place to experience this.

23. KOLMASKOP

NAMIBIA

This fabled ghost town of Kolmanskop is where the desert has reclaimed the old, abandoned mining town, leaving a unique frame of colourful buildings buried in desert sands.

Situated 15 km east of the harbour town of Lüderitz, Kolmanskop used to be a small railway station between Lüderitz and Keetmanshoop. As far as legend has it, the station derived its name from a Nama man named Coleman, who got stuck at the site with his ox waggon and consequently died of thirst.

The abandoned buildings and sand-filled streets make for a fascinating photography subject. The contrast between the decay of the structures and the stark beauty of the surrounding desert landscape creates a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere for photographers to capture. Its unique light conditions, with the sun casting long shadows and creating dramatic contrasts between light and shadow. This makes it an ideal location for photographers interested in capturing dynamic and evocative images.

Additionally, the town’s history and the eerie atmosphere of its abandoned structures – the lost ambition, peeling paint, collapsing wooden arches, and suffocating desert sands – make Kolmanskop a fascinating destination for anyone interested in urban exploration or ghost towns.
