4. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a large primeval forest located in south-western Uganda in the Kanungu District, and offers one of the most unique and exciting wildlife experiences on the planet! The forest is home to the endangered mountain gorilla – as well as many other species of primates, birds, and mammals – but it is this majestic and alluring ape that draws in visitors to it home from all over the world.
Lying on the edge of the Albertine Rift – which is the western branch of the Great East African Rift – Bwindi sits at an elevation ranging from 1,160 to 2,607 meters. The forest contains around 160 species of trees and over 100 species of ferns. The name Bwindi comes from the extensive stands of bamboo interspersed amongst the larger forest hardwoods. Bwindi is sometimes known as the “Place of Darkness”, because of the bamboo and thick ground cover of ferns, vines, and other plant growth.

This fabled ghost town of Kolmanskop is where the desert has reclaimed the old, abandoned mining town, leaving a unique frame of colourful buildings buried in desert sands.
Situated 15 km east of the harbour town of Lüderitz, Kolmanskop used to be a small railway station between Lüderitz and Keetmanshoop. As far as legend has it, the station derived its name from a Nama man named Coleman, who got stuck at the site with his ox waggon and consequently died of thirst.
The abandoned buildings and sand-filled streets make for a fascinating photography subject.
