Overview

Your adventure on the Okavango and Chobe Trail ignites amidst the thunderous spray of Victoria Falls. Immerse yourself in the thrill of white-water rafting, experience the adrenaline rush of bungee jumping, or simply soak up the vibrant ambiance of local markets and the stunning vistas of Victoria Falls National Park.

With no moment to spare, we voyage across the borders into the serene landscapes of Botswana, setting camp near the rhythmic whispers of the Chobe River. Our journey truly begins as we plunge into the wild heart of Chobe National Park, embarking on a sunset river cruise that reveals the playful ballet of elephants frolicking and crossing the river within arm’s reach.

We then make our way down to the town of Nata, a stone’s throw away from the Makgadikgadi salt pans. We set off for Maun with overnight bags at the ready, we stow our backpacks in our trusty vehicle, exchanging tearful goodbyes with our driver as we leap aboard our open 4×4 safari beasts, our trustworthy steeds for the next captivating three days. We relish a whole day of game viewing from our all-terrain chariots, sweeping through the vast wilderness of Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai Conservation Area, ever watchful for the myriad creatures that inhabit these endless plains. Both the Moremi and Khwai reserves hold a prestigious reputation as supreme big game territories, boasting the densest wildlife populations in Southern Africa.

Our journey leads us into the heart of the world’s most distinct wilderness, the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Here, we trace the path of the hippos in traditional dugout canoes or “mokoros”, expertly guided by seasoned locals through the maze of aquatic passages. Nature walks offer endless wonder, as every turn of the path unravels new discoveries. Traversing the Okavango Delta is a jewel in the crown of any Botswana visitor’s itinerary.

Before we draw the curtain on our grand adventure in Johannesburg, our jounrey skirts the southern end of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park through the Central Kalahari desert. Along the way, you’ll pass by several smaller towns and villages, offering glimpses into everyday life in Botswana. The choice is yours to embark on this awe-inspiring journey either from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls, or in reverse.

Please note: This itinerary is flexible and can be changed without notice. A detailed, up-to-date dossier itinerary is available to download.

Day 1 – Victoria Falls

Today is your arrival day in the town of Victoria Falls, home to the spectacular Victoria Falls.  The bustling adventure town of Victoria Falls also offers a range of optional activities for those wanting a dose of adrenaline.  If you wish to participate in the various activities available, please visit the offices of Shearwater, our preferred supplier (https://www.shearwatervictoriafalls.com/experience/, to book your activities. For the more relaxed traveller there are craft markets to explore and a delicious high tea is on offer at the Victoria Falls Hotel.   You will meet your crew in the reception area of Shearwater at 17:00pm.

Day 2 – Victoria Falls – Kasane – Chobe National Park

This morning you will have the opportunity to participate in the many optional activities on offer in the town of Victoria Falls.  After lunch, we travel the short distance to the Botswana border, crossing into Botswana and will arrive at our accommodation in the late afternoon, to set up camp on the banks of the Chobe River.

Day 3 – Kasane to Nata

We leave the banks of the Chobe River, and head south into the Kalahari Desert. You’ll notice the ‘bushveld’ change as you get closer to our overnight accommodation.

Day 4 – Khwai Conservation Area

You will be separated from your Nomad truck for the next 2 nights and it is therefore important that you pack/gather your personal belongings which you may need, before we depart camp today.  Please pack lightly and only take what you need for the following two nights.   Today we make our way towards the Okavango Delta, stopping at the viewing point of the Salt Pans en-route. Upon arrival in Maun, you will have the opportunity to go on an optional scenic flight over the Delta (time and weather permitting). After your optional flight, you will be collected in Maun in open 4×4 safari vehicles and will be transferred to the Khwai Conservation area.  Our guide will prepare us on what to expect for our afternoon mokoro excursion into the Okavango Delta. (Please note:  It is possible that the mokoro activity could take place the following morning, depending on the season).

Day 5 – Moremi Game Reserve
Today is a full day game drive as we spend most of our day on safari in the Moremi Game Reserve in search of the species that roam the plains.  Expect some bumpy roads as we traverse this wilderness area in our 4×4 vehicles.  Offering habitats from wetland, open water to the grasslands and Savannah woodland, we hope to see as many species of fauna and flora possible.  This evening we arrive back at Khwai to share and compare all the amazing sightings while on safari.

Day 6 – Khwai to Maun

We will depart early this morning in our 4×4 safari vehicles and make our way back to Maun, where we will overnight.

Day 7 – Maun to Palapye

Today we head south through the stark yet striking landscapes of the Central Kalahari desert. Our journey starts by skirting the southern end of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, so keep an eye out for an array of wildlife that moves between the watering holes. A notable point of interest on our route is the Orapa Diamond Mine, an imposing testament to Botswana’s mineral wealth. This mine, which is a collaborative venture between De Beers and the Botswana government, is counted among the world’s most extensive diamond mines. It serves as a critical economic pillar, contributing considerably to Botswana’s GDP and export earnings. Along the way, you’ll pass by several smaller towns and villages, offering glimpses into everyday life in Botswana before arriving in Papapye.

Day 8 – Palapye to Johannesburg

Leaving behind the town of Palapye, we travel through the Kalahari to the South African border. After completing border formalities we continue on through the North-West Province before our tour ends in Johannesburg.
