Victoria Falls: Unmissable Experiences In and Around the Falls

All About the Falls

Known by the indigenous Lozi population as Mosi-oa-Tunya, the “The Smoke that Thunders”, Victoria Falls is an awe-inspiring heritage site. One of the largest (considered possibly the largest) waterfalls in the world, this curtain of water borders on Zambia and Zimbabwe and channels the entirety of the Zambezi river over its edge. It is known for not only its size but the sound of the water striking the rocks below a 354ft drop. Due to this height and the upward draft made from the chasm, a spray of over 400 meters is thrown into the air, appearing as if it is raining 24/7. This mist catches the light and produces many rainbows, including the elusive “moonbow” phenomenon on a full moon.

The region is made up of basalt rocks, which give the gorges their dark and interesting texture. The waterfall funnels the water into a series of these gorges. This creates churning pools and rapids that zig-zag across the landscape, some having their own names like “Boiling Pot”.

The falls were formed during the Jurassic period and have been home to many different settlements and animals. There have been communities around the body of water since the Early Stone Age, evidenced by stone artifacts, pottery and oral history in the surrounding areas. The first European to document its viewing is David Livingstone, who named the site after Queen Victoria after being deeply moved by its beauty. This spectacular place has had cultural significance to local folklore for many years that continues into modern day, particularly with the Tonga tribe and the Zambezi river god, Nyami Nyami.
