Journey Through the Heart of East Africa: A Safari Adventure From NAIROBI TO VICTORIA FALLS

Let me share with you the adventure of a lifetime, one that took me through the heart of East Africa, filled with breathtaking landscapes, rich cultures, and unforgettable encounters with nature. An epic journey across East Africa where we traversed through five distinct countries on a 22-day odyssey, from Nairobi to Victoria Falls, with Nomad Tours. My naive city soul was immersed in a tapestry of contrasting ecosystems and cultures that enchanted me with every step along this soul enriching journey.

My tour began as I left behind the vibrant city of Nairobi, heading south towards the Tanzanian border. After swiftly handling the border formalities, I continued to the lively town of Arusha, my home for the night. Northern Tanzania, with its wonders like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Mount Kilimanjaro, lay before me.

Early the next morning, I hopped into a safari vehicle and set off towards the legendary Serengeti National Park. By afternoon, I arrived at our camp in the Seronera region, right in the heart of the Serengeti. Surrounded by awe-inspiring views and abundant wildlife, I unwound with a cold drink, taking in the sights and sounds of the wilderness from my Meru-style tent.

Day three dawned with an early rise for a full day’s game drive in the Serengeti. The park, renowned for its prolific wildlife, offered endless opportunities to spot majestic creatures in their natural habitat. The thrill of the chase, the serenity of the landscapes—each moment was a treasure.

I then journeyed towards the Ngorongoro Crater, where I descended into the conservation area, exploring the crater floor teeming with animals. After an enriching morning, I headed to Karatu for an overnight stay, reflecting on the incredible wildlife sightings I had just witnessed.

From Karatu, I made my way to the bustling Mto wa Mbu Market, known for its vibrant produce like rice and unique red bananas. Nestled on the main road linking Serengeti and Ngorongoro to Arusha, the market was a colorful experience of local life and culture in Northern Tanzania. Returning to Arusha, I spent the night sharing local brews and stories with my fellow tour members.

My next destination was Bagamoyo, a coastal town steeped in history from its days as a hub of the East African slave trade. The journey was an immersion into the essence of African road travel, with bustling markets, scenic villages, and endless vistas. As night fell, I prepared for the upcoming Zanzibar excursion.

With the sun rising, I traveled to Dar es Salaam and caught the ferry to Zanzibar Island. I headed straight to the eastern shores, settling into a beachfront resort for two nights. Here, I relaxed on the beach, enjoyed the infinity pool, or explored the charming neighborhood by bicycle.

The following day was mine to savor. Whether I chose to lounge on the beach, soak up the sun, or dive into local attractions, the day was a canvas for making island memories.

The next morning, I transferred to Stone Town, but not before experiencing a guided spice tour. Wandering through spice plantations, I witnessed the skill of farm workers and purchased fresh spices straight from the source. Stone Town, with its rich history and vibrant streets, awaited me for a walking tour, including a visit to the birthplace of Freddie Mercury.

My final day on Zanzibar concluded with a ferry ride back to Dar es Salaam, where I rested for the night, readying myself for the next leg of my journey.

I left the coast behind and headed inland to Mikumi National Park, Tanzania’s fourth largest. For two nights, I immersed myself in its vast wilderness, partaking in safaris or cultural tours that enriched my understanding of this magnificent land.

Next, I traveled to Iringa, a town perched on a cliff overlooking the Ruaha River Valley. En route, I stopped at Baobab Valley, where ancient trees created a surreal and breathtaking landscape, perfect for a group photo. In Iringa, the German colonial buildings and a bustling market transported me back in time.

My journey continued to the Mbeya Region, where I visited a local coffee plantation. I witnessed the coffee-making process firsthand and savored freshly brewed samples, a delightful treat for the senses.

Crossing the Great Rift Valley into Malawi, I reached the shores of Lake Malawi. Known as the “Warm Heart of Africa,” Malawi’s natural beauty was mesmerizing. Snorkeling in the lake’s crystal waters revealed brilliantly colored tropical cichlids, a magical underwater world.

My exploration of Lake Malawi extended over the next two days, moving further south and spending time on its tranquil shores. Whether I chose to relax, read, or partake in local attractions, the lake’s serene beauty was a constant companion.

My final sunrise at Lake Malawi marked the start of my journey to Zambia and the South Luangwa National Park. Crossing into Zambia, I paused in Chipata before settling at our camp by the Luangwa River, ending the day with a stunning sunset.

South Luangwa National Park offered a full day of safari exploration. Optional morning safaris or iconic walking tours showcased the park’s diverse wildlife. An evening sunset drive, complete with sundowners, gave me a chance to spot elusive nocturnal species, adding a touch of magic to my adventure.

Leaving Luangwa Valley, I visited Mulberry Mongoose, where local artisans crafted jewelry from organic materials. The Chipata area, a cotton-producing hub, provided a taste of African creativity and Zambian artistic culture.

Traveling along the Great East Road to Lusaka, I passed through rural Zambia, contrasting sharply with the familiar landscapes of home. A delightful stop at Luangwa Market offered a feast of African curios and fruits, enriching my journey with vibrant local culture.

My adventure culminated in Livingstone, home to the mighty Victoria Falls, “Musi oa Tunya” or the Smoke that Thunders. As the tour ended, the echoes of cascading waters and the memories of my incredible journey through East Africa remained with me, a story to share by many campfires to come.
