Africa’s Guinness World Records #2
World’s Highest Commercial Bungy Bridge
Africa is an extraordinary continent. It’s uniqueness is due to its vast range of natural terrains to explore, culture to experience, and activities to participate in. Africa is a place full of life and adrenaline and traveling to this continent opens up a new world of discovery, learning and pushing your personal boundaries.
The perfect way to push your personal boundaries is a daring a jump off the world’s highest commercial Bungy Bridge. Declared the highest commercial Bungy Bridge in 2003, The Bloukrans Bungy is located in South Africa and poses a jump of 216 meters. It is not only recorded as the highest Bungy Bridge, but also received the title of being the world’s highest commercial natural Bungy Jump. While waiting in line to jump, it is highly entertaining to watch others jump. There is also the opportunity to go on one of the beautiful walking trails in the surrounding natural area.
On the 9th of May 2008, Veronica Dean, a local from South Africa, performed 19 bungee jumps in one hour and set a new record for the ‘World’s most bungee jumps in one hour, outdoors’. Yet, in order to break a record, the bungee cord was narrowed down to 36 meters long.
A couple of years later, on the April 10th 2010, the 96 years old Mohr Keet performed a jump and was unaware that he henceforth broke a new world record of ‘World’s Oldest Bungee Jumper”. He also proved that if you follow your dreams, you’re never too old for anything.
According to Bloukrans Bungy, there have been a number of celebrities that have jumped off the bridge. These include; Prince Harry, Jack Osbourne, Thabo Mbeki, the Zuma family, Bobby Skinstad, Hansie Cronje, Fanie De Villiers, Kelly Slater, Andy Irons and the participants of The Amazing Race. Visiting the bungy may present you with the opportunity to meet up with your favorite idol, as you never know who’s going to jump on the same day with you!
The jump is performed above the Bloukrans River in between the phenomenal mountain ranges of the Tsitsikamma National Park. Since the Tsitsikamma National Park is a protected area, you can experience untouched and pure nature. The National Park is based on the Eastern side of South Africa and offers various walking and hiking trails leading to great waterfalls and high lookouts where you’ll be able to spot whales and dolphins. These are mostly spotted during our winter season from July up to October.
Jumping off Bloukrans Bungy means experiencing South Africa upside down. Have a different perspective of the country by putting your feet up in the air and spreading your arms like a free flying bird. Feel rewarded after your jump by all your friends congratulating you. This is bound to be one of the highlights of your trip to Africa.
