Overview

This tour gives a deep insight into the incredible history and culture of Morocco. This 9-day trip starts with a full day tour of the magical city of Marrakech, we visit mosques and minarets and bustling bazaars. The next day we leave and head through Berber villages as we travel over the highest mountain pass in Africa and visit the UNESCO site of Ait Benhaddou before reaching Ouarzazate. We then head on to the town of Tinghir, visiting Dades Canyon and Todra Gorge. The next highlight is a 4WD desert safari near Merzouga and a night in the desert at a comfortable Berber camp. We continue through the desert to Zagora before heading back via Ouarzazate to Marrakech.

    Day 01

    Arrival in Marrakesh

    You will be met at the airport by our friendly staff who will escort you to your accommodation in Marrakech. Here you can relax, settle in and prepare for your tour. If you arrive in the earlier part of the day, you can spend some time in the Marrakech’s famous Djemaa el Fna Square. This is the perfect place to get your first taste of the Moroccan culture with local food and entertainment.

    Day 02

    Marrakesh

    The day starts off with a trip to what has become a significant symbol to Marrakech – the iconic Koutoubia Mosque. Thereafter we visit the Bahia Palace and the Mausoleum, which both boast magnificent examples of Arabic craftsmanship. We will spend the afternoon around Jemaa El Fna square, where you’ll be able to witness the lively souks and experience the bustling and aromatic streets of Morocco. The day ends in the lively Djemaa El Fna Square.

    Day 03

    Atlas Mountains, Tizi N’Tichka Col, Dades Canyon

    After a delicious breakfast, you’ll be able to enjoy spectacular views of the Mountains, which often boast snow capped peaks, as we drive across the Tizi N’tichka col. At 2260m, this is the highest pass in Northern Africa. As we descend from the pass, we’ll pass the Ouarzazate, otherwise known as the “Place of no noise”. Interestingly, in the last few decades, Ouarzazate became a center for film production where many famous films such as Gladiator took place. Our final highlight today is a drive through the Dades Canyon before settling down in Tinghir for the night.

    Day 04

    Todra Gorge, Erg Chebbi Dunes, Desert Camp

    Close to the town of Tinerhir, the Todra and the Dades Rivers have carved out a narrow canyon called Todra Gorge, on their final 40 kilometers through the mountains. This is where we’ll stop for a short, memorable hike to the bottom of the valley floor. Thereafter we’ll continue along the “road of a thousand Kasbahs” to Erfoud. We will then switch into 4WD vehicles which will take us to Merzouga and through the Erg Chebbi sand desert to a traditional Berber camp amidst the dunes. Here you’ll be able to get an authentic, Moroccan experience as you enjoy a camel ride at sunset. This will include an opportunity to walk along the tops of some majestic dunes. This will offer you the perfect view as the sun sinks below the desert horizon

    Day 05

    Draa Valley, Ouarzazate, Alt Benhaddou

    Get to know a little bit more about the locals of Morocco with a breakfast served by our Berber hosts. Thereafter we’ll continue with our tour by heading out of the dunes and driving back to to Rissani and the birthplace of the Alaouita Dynasty. Here we’ll swop out our 4WD vehicles to Erfoud, an idyllic oasis town. We then continue back along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Draa Valley to Ouarzazate. This will be the last stop for the day. While visiting Ouarzazate again, we’ve made sure to include a tour of the movie studios as well as visiting the well-known Kasbah at the UNESCO world heritage site of Ait Benhaddou. This is an extraordinary ensemble of buildings offering a complete panorama of pre-Saharan earthen construction techniques. A striking example of the architecture of southern Morocco.

    Day 06

    Taroudant

    We start our day with a drive that skirts the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. This route boasts fantastic views and will also allow the opportunity to stop en-route to see the Kasbah at Taliouine and to learn about the production of saffron, the world’s most expensive spice. You will also have free time to wander around Taroudant, a large walled Berber town, also known as ‘Little Marrakesh’.

    Day 07

    Essaouira

    Today will give us the opportunity visit the coast as we stop as Morocco’s main resort town of Agadir. We’ll embark on a tour of the harbour, were you should notice a few nearby anglers offering their catch. Thereafter we’ll continue to the famous High Kasbah, before continuing along the coast towards the North Atlantic coastal town of Essaouira. Here we will wander around the old Medina of Essaouira which bristles with history. It is a fantastic location to soak in music and art, the two biggest drawcards to this tranquil hub of Morocco. Jimi Hendrix once sojourned here and some suggest that the song Castles Made of Sand was written while he was in Essaouria.

    Day 08

    Marrakesh

    We’ll spend the first half of the day continuing to explore Essaouira, including a boat trip to the nearby island of Mogador, a popular location for birdwatchers. Why not try a windsurfing or kitesurfing lesson while at the beach? Otherwise randomly exploring at your own leisure is also a good option. After lunch we drive back to Marrakech.

    Marrakesh

    Today you are free to explore Marrakech further and perhaps buy some final souvenirs. Thereafter we’ll transfer you to the airport for your departure flight.
