Overview

The East Africa & Mozambique Adventure Tour starts at Arusha and the Serengeti National Park where you are sure to see incredible wildlife before setting off for the magical beaches of Zanzibar. You will have ample opportunity to create some island memories. Go snorkelling, scuba diving, enjoy one of the many ocean safaris or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun. We then head off to Malawi and spend some time on the shores of her fresh water lake and finally on to the pristine South Luangwa National park in Zambia. Crossing the Southern reaches of Zambia we make our way to the adventure town of Victoria Falls before we visit Kruger National Park. Experience the thrill of being on safari, observing the big five as well as zebras, giraffe and rhinos in the largest game reserve in South Africa. Furthermore the sights of the Panorama route offer us a day of scenic delights. We will visit the highlights of Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels and God’s Window before we travel through emerald-hilled and game rich Swaziland. We continue to the Bazaruto archipelago in Mozambique. While the beaches at Barra are safe for swimming, the reefs on this stretch of coast offer excellent opportunities for diving or snorkelling. Our final road trip takes us back to Johannesburg as we reflect on the wildlife and beaches that have filled our days.

      Camping     Accommodated
    Day 01

    Arusha

    Leaving behind the bustle of Nairobi we travel south to the Tanzanian border, after completing border formalities we continue to Arusha which provides the base for our optional Serengeti Excursion. This evening we will be briefed by our local operator on the Serengeti Excursion and we will have the opportunity to pack for the coming days. A smaller daypack or bag will be required for the Serengeti Excursion as it is operated on smaller vehicles and luggage space is limited. The Serengeti Excursion is offered only as a camping excursion and sleeping bags are available for hire.

     

    For those are not taking part in the optional Serengeti Excursion, you will remain at the lodge in Arusha. This presents the opportunity for a variety of Day Tours that can be booked on arrival in Arusha this afternoon, these include Day Tours to Arusha National Park, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. For those who prefer to immerse themselves in the Maasai Culture, why not join a 2-day trip to Olpopongi Maasai Village. All activities are optional and as subject to availability with the service provider. Optional excursions can be booked through local operators like Tanzania Experience www.tanzania-experience.com or Tanzania Expeditions www.tanzania-expeditions.com. Pre-booking is not essential, but may be advisable to ensure availability of your preferred option. Meals are not included for those not participating in the Serengeti excursion.

     

    Day 02

    Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater Excursion

    The following days are set aside for the 3-night camping excursion into the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. This area has one of the most densely inhabited large animal populations in Africa. The Serengeti excursion is in open topped 4×4 safari vehicles in order to tackle the challenging side roads in the parks. We leave our accommodation in the morning and drive to the Serengeti. On arrival we will start with our first game drive.   The campsites we visit are fully owned by the Tanzania National Parks Board. Over 90,000 tourists visit the Serengeti National Park annually. These facilities are sadly not sufficiently maintained by the Parks Board and we have attempted to offer our services to improve the situation, however our offers were not accepted. We do ask that you have an open mind when visiting the ablutions in the Serengeti National Park. Please supply your own wet wipes and toilet paper.

    Day 03

    Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater Excursion

    We spend the entire day game driving through the Serengeti. Our route is dependent on the movement of the game and sightings.

    Day 04

    Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater Excursion

    Today we explore more of the Serengeti and make our way to the famous Ngorongoro Crater. We drive down to the bottom of the Crater, where we try and see as many animals as possible

    Day 05

    Arusha

    We return from the Serengeti and re-united with our truck and crew in Arusha. A welcome shower awaits us on our return and tonight we share a meal in camp as we prepare for tomorrow’s travel.

    Day 06

    Bagamoyo

    We head out early this morning as we journey south to our overnight stop in the coastal town of Bagamoyo. Formerly a centre point of the East African slave trade, Bagamoyo lies just north of the port of Dar es Salaam and is a perfect launching point for our upcoming Zanzibar Excursion. While today is primarily a travel day, we experience the hustle and bustle of one of Africa’s major travel routes. Road travel in Africa is an experience in itself and the bustling markets, villages and scenic backdrops that line the routes give a window into the lifestyle of rural Africa. This evening we will prepare for our Zanzibar Excursion that begins tomorrow morning.

    Day 07

    Nungwi (Zanzibar)

    We complete the short journey into Dar es Salaam this morning and board our ferry for the two hour trip to Zanzibar. After arriving at the ferry port we board make our way to Nungwi on the northern shores of the island, we take the opportunity to visit the spice farms of Kidichi and Kizambani on our way this afternoon. Zanzibar is renowned for its spices and fragrances and we have the chance to experience this first-hand today. There are a number of excursions that can be arranged for the coming days in Nungwi and your guide will be on hand to assist.

     

    Day 08

    Nungwi

    Today is a free day for enjoying some of the many attractions and activities on offer. Water sports are the order of the day and Nungwi offers fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving and a variety of ocean safari options. Whatever it is you chose to do today, you will have ample opportunity to create some island memories. Rent a scooter and explore the many attractions on offer or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun.

    Day 09

    Stone Town

    Our visit to Nungwi comes to an end today as we travel back to Zanzibar Town in the afternoon. Boasting a rich history this bustling port was once a landmark on both the Slave and Spice trade routes, we spend our final night on the island on the beaches south of the port city.

    Day 10

    Dar es Salaam

    This morning we have an opportunity to explore the historic area of Stone Town before catching an afternoon ferry back to Dar es Salaam. Stone Town represents the historic centre of Zanzibar Town and is a must see for those with an interest in history, culture and the unique architecture of the historic port. Tonight we enjoy an optional dinner out in Dar es Salaam.

    Day 11

    Mikumi

    Leaving the coast behind us we travel inland and make our way to Mikumi where we stop for the night. Mikumi National Park ranks as the fourth largest park in Tanzania and forms part of a 75 000 square kilometre wilderness that centres on Selous, Africa’s largest game reserve.

     

    Day 12

    Iringa

    We rise early this morning and enjoy an extensive game drive in the Mikumi National Park. This afternoon we continue to the southern highlands of Tanzania and our final stop in Tanzania.

    Day 13

    Lake Malawi

    Leaving Tanzania behind, we descend the Great Rift Valley and cross the border into Malawi. Known as the “Warm Heart of Africa” the lakeside country is blessed with natural beauty and our destination tonight is the shores of Lake Malawi where we look forward to spending the next few days enjoying the attractions of the northern regions of the lake.

    Day 14

    Lake Malawi

    Today offers a range of optional activities or simply a day at the beach, we will pay a visit to a local community this morning to meet the people of the lake. Hikers will find a selection of trips, including a rather strenuous outing to the mission village of Livingstonia, set high above the lake. Snorkelling in the crystal waters offers the chance to see first-hand the brilliantly coloured tropical cichlids, tiny fish often found in colourful aquariums around the world. Your guide will assist you to plan your activities for the coming days, or you can simply slow your clock to Africa time relaxing on the lake shore.

    Day 15

    Lake Malawi

    This morning we set aside some time for a visit to Karonga, this interesting town has a turbulent history as a centre Malawi’s slave trade. Home to a museum that boasts a dinosaur amongst its displays, we learn more of the rich history of both people and the natural world. We return for a final afternoon of relaxation and a final sundowner on the shores of this great lake.

    Day 16

    Lake Malawi

    This morning we make the short journey south to the Nkothakota region of the Lake Shore, here we spend a final evening on the shores of the lake.

    Day 17

    South Luangwa

    This morning we enjoy a final sunrise on the shores of Lake Malawi before setting off for Zambia and the South Luangwa National Park. After crossing the border into Zambia we make a short stop in Chipata before continuing to our camp on the banks of the Luangwa River. Having watched the sun rise over Lake Malawi in the morning we enjoy an equally spectacular sunset over the Luangwa River this evening.

    Day 18

    South Luangwa

    South Luangwa National Park is a world-class safari destination and we have a full day to explore the park in search of the variety of wildlife found in the park. This morning you can partake in an optional morning safari or during the dry season (April to December) you can join one of the iconic walking safaris on offer in the park. This afternoon we will enjoy a Sunset Drive in the park, we split our time between day and night with a sundowner stop in between. The unique opportunity to explore the park at night gives us a chance to spot the elusive nocturnal species that are rarely seen in the day.

    Day 19

    Petauke

    Leaving the Luangwa Valley this morning we make a stop at Tribal Textiles. The Chipata area is a major producer of Cotton and this morning we get a taste of the creativity of the African culture. Those interested can enjoy a tour of their workshops (March to December) to see how these colourful fabrics are crafted. Our destination tonight is the small town of Petauke.

    Day 20

    Eureka

    As an important link between Lusaka and neighbouring Malawi, the Great East Road winds through rural Zambia and we will cross the Luangwa River on our way to Lusaka. The route today is dotted with villages and subsistence farms, todays landscapes serve as a stark contrast to the developed countries so many of us call home.

    Day 21

    Victoria Falls

    Crossing the Southern reaches of Zambia we make our way to the adventure town of Victoria Falls, this afternoon we get our first look at the mighty Victoria Falls. Crossing the bridge between Zambia and Zimbabwe we get a view of “Musi oa Tunya”, the Smoke that Thunders as the falls are known in the local language. Victoria Falls offers a host of optional activities and these can be booked on arrival in Victoria Falls.

    Day 22

    Victoria Falls to Francistown

    Departing Victoria Falls this morning, we cross into Botswana and travel south to Francistown in central Botswana. We reach our overnight stop on the outskirts of Francistown in the late afternoon.

    Day 23

    Francistown to Johannesburg

    Leaving early we continue to the border with South Africa and on to the city of Johannesburg. All travellers are invited to join us for a traditional meal tonight, this can be booked with your guide on the day before arrival. We arrive at Belvedere Estate in the late afternoon

    Day 24

    Johannesburg to Kruger National Park

    Leaving the city of Johannesburg behind us we make our way east through the coalfields of Mpumalanga. Our journey today follows in the footsteps of the old trade-routes to the Lowveld and the Kruger National Park. This afternoon there will be an opportunity to join an optional Sundowner Drive, booking is essential and your guide can assist on departure this morning. *Please note that it is possible that your crew and truck will change today.  Please report to the hotel reception to meet your crew for your 07:00 departure.

    Day 25

    Kruger National Park

    Rising early this morning we enter the Kruger National Park to enjoy a full-day of game viewing. The abundance of wildlife presents us with opportunities for excellent sightings, while the Kruger is also home to the famed members of Africa’s Big-5. Our activity package offers the added excitement of experiencing the park from an open-sided 4×4 vehicle. This evening there is a second opportunity for the optional Sundowner Drive.

    Day 26

    Panorama Route

    While those who elect to do the optional morning walk will have an earlier start, we set out a little later today and travel the short distance to the Panorama Route. Strung along the escarpment that divides the central plateau and low-lying bushveld of the Kruger, the sights of the Panorama route offer us a day of scenic delights. We will visit the highlights of Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels and God’s Window before returning to camp in the late afternoon.

    Day 27

    Kruger National Park to Swaziland

    We set out early this morning for as we re-enter the Kruger National Park, our Nomad truck offers an excellent platform as we game drive our way to the south. Exiting the park in the afternoon, we cross the border into Swaziland and set up for the night.

     

    Day 28

    Swaziland

    Our stay in Swaziland presents us with an opportunity to enjoy one of the optional morning game drive activities in Hlane Game Reserve. Hlane offers a selection of activities and the Rhino Game Drive is highly recommended. No visit to Swaziland would be complete without an introduction to the rich culture of the Swazi people, this afternoon we are invited by the Chief to visit his village and learn more about the traditions of this proud nation.

    Day 29

    Swaziland to Maputo

    With the beaches of the Indian Ocean beckoning we enter Mozambique and make our first stop in Maputo, the capital city offers a vibrant and eclectic mix of cultures. After checking-in at our hotel and enjoying a lunch out at a popular local restaurant, we explore the city sights on a walking tour with our guide. Maputo offers interesting and varied architecture and no visit to the city would be complete without a browse through a market. Tonight we eat out and get a chance to experience the night-life of this intriguing city.

    Day 30

    Inhambane - Barra Beach

    Setting out for the Inhambane District we travel the northern road along the coast. While it is a long day on the road there is much to see as we pass the many villages and plantations of coconuts, cashews and sugar cane. Our journey will bring us to the palm lined beaches for two days of relaxation and ocean fun. Tonight we are welcomed with a traditional Mozambique dinner.

     

    Day 31

    Inhambane

    With two days of beach time we have an opportunity to relax and enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the more adventurous can sign up for a variety of optional activities. While the beaches at Barra are safe for swimming, the reefs on this stretch of coast offer excellent opportunities for diving or snorkelling.

    Day 32

    Inhambane

    Today we make the short drive to Tofo to spend the day enjoying yet another of Mozambique’s iconic beach destination. With safe swimming, a charming market and a number of popular beach bars, Tofo is perfect for a day’s outing. A second day not only ensures that you have the opportunity to make the most of the activities on offer, it also allows us some flexibility to adapt to the weather.

     

    Day 33

    Vilanculos

    This morning we make a stop in Inhambane where you will have the opportunity to explore the market and the historic streets of this former slave trading port. For those who enjoy a good adventure, your guide will arrange one of the famous Dhow ferries to sail you across the bay. These sturdy old boats have plied the East Coast of Africa for centuries and the trip across the bay is a truly local experience. Should you prefer, you may remain with the truck for the trip to Maxixe on the far side of the bay. Reunited with our truck we travel north to our next stop at Vilanculos.

    Day 34

    Bazaruto Excursion

    We board a traditional Dhow this morning and set sail to the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, one of the largest Marine reserves in Southern Africa. We spend the day exploring the islands, snorkelling and enjoying the beaches of this island paradise. Be sure to keep your sunblock handy as today is filled with sun, sea, sand and exploration. We return in the afternoon and enjoy a well-earned night of rest.

    Day 35

    Xai Xai District

    Well rested we set course for the Xai-Xai district, arriving in the late afternoon we have time for a walk on the beach or a sundowner to bid farewell to the Indian Ocean and the pristine beaches of Mozambique.

    Day 36

    Malelane Region

    Early risers can enjoy the sunrise in the beach this morning before we depart today. We pass through Maputo and continue to the border, returning to South Africa and our final night near the town Malelane.

    Day 37

    Johannesburg

    Our final road trip takes us back to Johannesburg as we reflect on the wildlife and beaches that have filled our days. All travellers are invited to join us for a traditional meal tonight, this can be booked with your guide on the day before arrival. Many great tales are shared and tonight presents an opportunity to join fellow travellers in celebrating the many wonders of African travel.
