Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro crater tours are essential part of any visit to Africa. This UNESCO world heritage site holds a wealth of fascinating areas of interest for historians and the general public. Some of the oldest hominid remains have been found near the crater as well as artefacts dating back to early human evolution. The animal life is abundant and the craters amazing historical footprint extends into the animal kingdom too with fossilised remains having previously been found.

The first European explorers didn’t set foot in the crater till the end of the 19th century. Now with Nomads Ngorongoro Crater tours you can retrace their steps and experience the wonderment that the region has to offer. The crater once formed part of the world famous Serengetti, today though it is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and is found in Tanzania. Hominid hunter gatherers inhabited the area three million years ago and they were replaced by pastoralists a few thousand years ago. The Maasai took control of the area in the 1800s through a series of battles with the local tribes and have inhabited the area ever since. Today the area is run as a multi-purpose reserve which allows subsistence farming and limited dwelling.

We have two adventures which include Ngorongoro crater tours, it is an optional extra to the tours and is a 4 day camping excursion and will include game viewing in the Serengetti National park which is without one of the most spectacular places to visit if on safari. Although it is optional our Ngorongor crater tour is highly recommended. It is a truly unique place with more to offer than simply wildlife viewing. It is a one in a lifetime opportunity to explore a region that was home to our earliest ancestors.
