Lake Andraikiba

Lake Andraikiba in Madagascar forms part of the Antsirabe region and lakes which form part of this area is considered to be a must-see for every traveller. Antsirabe can be found approximately 169 kilometres south from Antananarivo which is the main city of the Vakinanakaratra region. It’s the countryside around Antsirabe to the west of the town which is popular to explore; with its many gorgeous lakes of which Lake Andraikiba and Lake Tritriva are the most popular destinations.

Lake Andraikiba is easy to access from any corner of the city; an extremely popular option for travelling to these lakes are through hiring bikes and taking the very scenic route out to the beautiful lakes. Lake Andraikiba is a seven kilometer bike ride from the city and if you’re planning on visiting Lake Tritrivia too this lake is 20 kilometres from the city. Both Andraikiba and Tritriva are volcano lakes in nature; Tritriva which is furthest from Antsirabe is tucked away right under the mountain after which it is named. The lake is 180 meters deep and astonishingly enough is shaped similar to Madagascar itself.

A sad, but beautiful legend surrounds this lake; it is believed that two lovers, whose marriage was forbidden by their parents, made the decision to drown themselves in the lake in order to be together forever. After their deaths they were reincarnated into two very closely growing trees next to the lake. Over the years the branches of the trees became so intertwined that they eventually became one tree.

Lake Andraikiba on the other hand can be described as beautiful and extremely unique. The area has some distinct rules, for example the neighborhood around Lake Andraikiba doesn’t allow any pork meat and no silk fabrics are allowed to be soaked in the lake. This lake also surrounds itself with a strange legend; the spirit of a pretty pregnant lady is believed to be haunting the lake after she drowned here many years ago. Even to this day it is said that you might see her at the break of dawn resting on a rock by the lakeside.

If you would like to make Lake Andraikiba and Lake Tritriva your next holiday destination why not make use of Nomad Tours’ professional and friendly services and travel to this enchanting region of Madagascar. Both of these lakes offer beauty like you’ve never experienced before and with Nomad you’ll have an unforgettable holiday experience.
